Congratulations to the Winners of RS Innovators Championship
The world is currently faced with constantly evolving environmental and social complex challenges which require multi-disciplinary engineers who have a strong awareness and skillset to innovate sustainability. Competition within the business environment is an unavoidable reality and we are continuously looking to find ways to do our bit. To do this we recognise we need diverse schools of thought, especially from young people on how we can be and remain the first choice to our customers.
As key players in the market, we want to be able to solve problems faster, meet our ambitious ESG goals and navigate tighter environmental compliance regulation.
This global competition for young innovators (18 – 30 years) to work in teams of their choice to design solutions to solve our ESG goals aligned with UN-SDG. The competition is designed to allow young people to showcase their skills whilst developing problem-solving skills with the consideration of the impact of what we do throughout the product or project lifecycle.
People. Planet. Product Student Design Challenge
The People. Planet. Product. Student Design Challenge was launched to inspire engineering innovation and empower global communities. In partnership with The Washing Machine Project, our challenge provides an opportunity for students to enhance the design and accessibility of the Divya manual crank washing machine, thereby contributing to the improvement of lives.
Students were tasked with submitting their ideas to address challenges posed by The Washing Machine Project, centered on real-world problems.
Kai Goodall, a Master's student from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, was announced as the winner of the global competition for creating an alternative to the Divya Manual Hand Crank Washing machine – his 'Pedal n Spin' Foot-cranked washing machine.
Since winning the competition, Kai has constructed four new Pedal n Spin machines and donated them to a community in Cape Town that lacks easy access to a washing machine. He continues to test the Pedal n Spin with the community to identify ways to enhance the current design and find more efficient methods for building additional machines to deliver to communities in need across South Africa.
