What are rocker switches?

A rocker switch is an electrical component which opens or closes electrical circuits by using a rocking action, as one side is pressed, the other side rises. These switches are usually marked with a small circle on one end to designate that the device it actuates is “on” and a horizontal line or dash at the other to designate that the device is “off”.

Types of rocker switch

Rocker switches are available in various colours, shapes and sizes with different termination options and symbols available on the actuator.

There are four main classifications of rocker switch:

  • Single pole, double throw (SPDT)
  • Single pole, single throw (SPST)
  • Double pole, double throw (DPDT)
  • Double pole, single throw (DPST)

Within these classifications, there is a huge variety of electronic rocker switches available, including, illuminated, miniature, micro, waterproof, and subminiature.

Where are rocker switches used?

These devices are ideal for compact, economical switching where current ratings do not exceed 20 amps. They're used in automotive applications, computer power supplies, display monitors, coffee machines - just about anything that needs an on-off switch can use a rocker switch.
