What is Tri Rated Cable?

Tri Rated cable is a type of single core insulated electrical cable which is also known as BS6231 cable, panel wire or switchgear cable. It is also referred to as H07V2-K and H05V2-K cable under the European harmonisation (HAR) designation code. This type of cable is a class 5 flexible, high temperature flame retardant cable and is commonly used in control switchgear applications. These applications include instrumentation panels, motor control centres and motor starters.

What does Tri-Rated Mean?

Tri-Rated cable gets its name from the fact that it meets the specifications of three different standard setting bodies. These bodies are as follows:

• The British Standards Institute (BSI). The cable is manufactured to meet BS6231 Type CK

• Underwriters Laboratories (UL)

• Canadian Standards Association (CSA)

This triple rating of this Tri Rated cable means that it can be used in the North American markets as well as the European ones. This results in a leaner and more flexible equipment manufacturing process

Tri Rated cable is a single core cable with flexible plain stranded copper conductors that are surrounded by a HR PVC (heat resistant polyvinyl chloride) insulation

Features and Benefits

This Tri-rated cable with its triple rating of BS6231, UL and CSA means it has the following features;

• Can operate in high temperatures of 90°C for continuous use and up to 105°C for a limited period of time

• Has a high 600 / 1000 V voltage rating

• Has a Class 5 flexibility. This means that the conductor is flexible with a core formed by a number of thin wires (as rated by British Standard BS EN 60228:2005)

• Has a HR PVC (Heat Resistant PVC) insulation enabling the cable to be used in high temperature applications
