Screwdrivers

A hand tool known as a screwdriver according to the earliest records has been used since the late middle ages. Screwdrivers are used for insertion and removal of screws and are available in a multitude of variations to correspond to the correct screw drive. The drive or head of a screw has a shaped cavity and protrusion that fits the screwdriver tip to allow turning force known as torque to be applied in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction.
They are everywhere!
The one tool that appears in everyone’s home is the screwdriver. Whether you are a DIY enthusiast or a tradesperson, you know about or have used one. There are several different types to consider and where to use them as well: our Screwdrivers Guide illustrates them all to help you select the model that best suits you and your projects.
The Break-down
You can typically break down a screwdriver into three parts, the handle, shaft and tip.
Handle:
The handles are normally made of plastic, bi-material, nylon, cellulose acetate, etc., designed to maximise grip and comfort. VDE approved ensures that tools like screwdrivers are safe to use when working with electricity.
Shaft:
The shaft is made from materials like steel, nickel or even beryllium copper. These are durable metals, strong enough to resist force applied when used.
Tips:
There is virtually an unlimited choice when it comes to driver tips, they tend to be variations of the most popular shaped pieces;
• Phillips
• Pozidriv
• Slotted
• Torx
Tip size
• Metric or Imperial (mm or Inches)
What does VDE Approved mean?
VDE approval ensures that tools like screwdrivers are safe to use when working with electricity. A VDE approved tool means that it has passed a series of rigorous tests ensuring the quality, safety, construction and ergonomics have been met. Due to health and safety regulations, the VDE standard is being recognised more and is commonly found in the building trade.
What are the typical uses?
Screws are a necessary part of everyday life as they feature in almost anything. Assembling furniture, finishing DIY projects, installations in commercial settings, screws can be found in anything and have become a useful ally in every industry. Several different types of screwdrivers are available, from Phillips to Pozidriv each serving their own purpose.
Why would you need one?
Depending on the setting, you could be a DIY enthusiast working on their next project and want a reliable tool. You may just be a conscientious homeowner who wants to have tools readily available if needed to make repairs. The screwdriver has become the go-to tool in the toolbox and will continue to be in the future
This is important!
To formulate a plan and purchase the correct screwdriver or a screwdriver set, make sure you know the size of the screw you are going to use as this is going to be an essential part of your work.
