Plastic Pipe Fittings
Plastic pipe fittings can be attached to plastic pipes to change the direction of the water flow or to provide a connection between pipes. These fittings help transport materials such as water, gas or liquid waste and are suitable for plumbing installations of hot and cold water services and central heating systems. Also plastic pipe fittings are less expensive than copper fittings.
Pipe fittings are attached to pipes usually via a thread, push fit, compression or plastic welding. Plastic pipe fittings will have a diameter given in mm or inches and a 50 mm diameter will fit onto a pipe with a compatible diameter.
Types of plastic pipe fittings:
- Elbow and Bend fittings prove a change of direction
- Tee and Cross fittings provide connection to multiple other pipes in a system
- Coupler, Adapter, and Union fittings provide an extension of one pipe to another
- Cap and Plug fittings provide termination for pipes

- Collet cover which prevents tampering or accidental removal.

PVC is a plastic which is a popular material for pipework fittings. It is durable, lightweight and cost-effective. PVC is non-toxic and therefore safe to use in manufacturing. PVC is both water and fire resistant which makes it ideal for transporting liquids and gases. PVC pipe fittings have a long lifespan and can be recycled at the end of use.
What types of PVC are available?
uPVC (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride), sometimes referred to as PVC-U is a hard plastic which is durable and long-lasting. It requires very little maintenance, is weather resistant and is ideal for pipework fittings. CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) is a more flexible PVC which can tolerate high temperatures. It is ideal for industrial liquid applications and for use with both hot and cold water systems.
What are push fit fittings?
These fittings are easy to install with simple push in connections and are ready to use immediately without the need for specialist plumbing tools. They work by pushing the pipe into the fitting and the metal spurs inside the fittings tightly grip the pipes. The O rings inside the fittings creates a safe, secure and watertight seal.
