Industrial IoT & Industry 4.0

The terms Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) have different origins but they are both based on the same product technology and applications.
RS offers many devices which allow for an easy machine to machine (M2M) and internet communication. Nevertheless, we have introduced a series of smart add-on hardware specifically developed to simplify the connection of the existing legacy systems to the Internet of Things.

Siemens SIMATIC IOT2040 Gateway

The SIMATIC IOT2040 is the first 'Open' intelligent gateway that standardises communication between the various data sources, then analyses and forwards the data to the corresponding recipients.

It is a solution that can be easily implemented into existing machines or control systems which use legacy fieldbuses to communicate, and enable vital process performance data to be unlocked, shared and used to improve and optimise production.

Watch this short video to quickly understand the benefits of the IOT2040 and joining the connected ‘Internet of Things’ world.

We are constantly expanding our industrial IoT products offer with the latest cutting-edge solutions from the leading industrial brands and the most innovative Start-up.

Brainboxes helps customers to add IoT capability to existing systems

Luke Walsh from Brainboxes has assembled an application that impressively demonstrates how easy it is to collect the inputs and outputs from existing devices used within an industrial application and make them available to a wider network. In his demonstration he shows, together with Greig Cameron from DesignSpark how data provided from standard industrial devices, coming from different suppliers can be combined.

The demo also highlights the options users have with Brainboxes software APIs that allows remote control and monitoring of the IOs via a laptop or a mobile. In addition the bespoke article covers the importance of using modern communication protocols and how they support system security, real-time communication and authentication.

Read the full story on DesignSpark which does also include a video that explains the whole approach in an easy and visual way.

For those who want to replicate the application they have also published the parts list and "how-to" assembling guide.

How to control an Industrial Robot with groov

Massimo Temporelli from the Fab Lab in Milan shows on DesignSpark how to build up an IGUS bench robot and enrich the system with standard parts from RS. In his demonstration he uses an Arduino based open source PLCs, four stepper motor drives and an industrial power supply to control the four axis of the robot arm.
In addition he has connected groov from Opto 22 to the robot control unit which enables users to remotely control the robot arm with any devices that has access to the world wide web.

Read the full story on Designspark which will also include a how-to video and instructions which will allow to replicate the application.
